News from 2005 |
The story of Erin McGraw:
This wonderful mare belongs to Meg Carroll of Rhode Island. She had
heard that the unregistered mare was sired by Mountain Pearl some years
ago, and was even more convinced the more she learned about the two of
them. We had to agree after reading Meg's description of Erin when she
contacted us in June. (see description to the right)
Meg worked all summer tracking down the registration
information and sure enough, Erin's DNA test proved she is a Pearl!
Meg and Erin attended the IDHSNA annual show and inspection last month
where Erin passed her RIDSH inspection and took home the Diamond Cup for
highest dressage scores - a 70 in training 1 and 70.4 in training 3.
Congratulations Erin and Meg. We look forward to more news next
year!

Meg's description of Erin:
She's
a beautiful bay with a star, three white socks and one snip on her right
foot. She also has a white snip on her lip --- Mountain Pearl marked her
well. She has that wonderful sweet personality, with a huge dose of humor.
Bravery? Yup, we happened to be hacking in a nearby park when the Blue
Angels buzzed us -- ground shaking, piercing noise, the works. She looked
up -- and stood her ground.
She's also very curious and has learned quite a few tricks (clicker
training). She throws a hula hoop over her head, picks up my hat and whip,
and unpacks her toy box. Not necessarily stuff that's valued in the
dressage or hunter ring, but she and I love it. She actually seems to love
problem solving.
She's smart, athletic, willing, and sweet.
In essence, she's a Pearl mare.

Heart Mountain Pearl RID
|
Good
bye Monty.
Too often the highs in life are fleeting and far too quickly replaced
by heartache and sadness. This is certainly the case with Heart
Mountain Pearl RID.
Heart Mountain Pearl was born in Wyoming in the spring of 2002 to
Amber Maid RID and her owner Lynda Peters. Lynda called him Monty
(which was also his grand-sire Mountain View's name). Always a large lad,
Monty grew to 17 hands before his third birthday. And his heart was
as big as the rest of him. He loved people and was as gentle as they
come. This spring Lynda started him under saddle herself, with very
little fuss.
Just over a month ago Monty was presented for inspection to John
McCarthey and Michael Kirwan. They felt he was a kind, laid back
gentleman with lovely floating gaits and passed him easily, thus placing
him amongst the elite of Irish Draught stallions - an RID.
Oh so sadly, his story has now ended. Monty colicked and did not
survive surgery. Our deepest sympathy goes out to Lynda for her
heart breaking loss, and to the ID world. (Oct 2005) |

This year for the first time the
Dublin Horse Show offered a class for Irish Draughts under saddle and it
created a lot of interest.
At the end of the day it was Michael Hayden's Sheskeen Pride taking
SECOND place in the historic class. Sheskeen Pride is a 10 year old
gelding by Mountain Pearl out of Annaleg Ann.
Photos are courtesy of www.jumpingaround.com
and a full report on this historic class is on their web site.
Congratulations Michael and Sheskeen Pride!

Pam and Padi's Classic Reunion
|
From Pam in Virginia "Just
thought I'd give you an update on how Classic did at her first show
under saddle. I entered her in 5 classes, two green horse (walk
trot only) and three open walk/trot. She came home with three firsts,
two seconds and a championship! (She even managed to win herself an
equine massage) After
the show the judge approached me to ask about Classic and mentioned she
was in the top three horses for movement out of the entire show! She
also commented how nice it is to see a draught that can compete against
the TBs and she'd love to have her in her own barn."

From Cathy in Florida: "Here's
a picture of Fair Hope Pearl taken during her stadium at her last
event. She won the beginner novice division. Her dressage
score was 26.5 which we were very happy with. She went clean in
stadium and cross country and own over an extremely fancy warmblood.
Pearl is 5 years 4 months old and we are moving her up to Novice.
Many people ask about her when she is at a show or schooling cross
country. Pearl makes herself at home any place anytime. If you
want to use me as a reference or if clients would like to see her just let
me know." |
From Tanya in Pennsylvania: "Just a
quick note about Shamus Carrigan, foaled 4-29-04 out of our Clyde mare,
Isabelle. He is wonderful, kind and very gentle. He is almost
16 hands and at just over a year old he trailers, clips, bathes, and does
just about everything you ask of him. He has been a joy to own and
he looks like he will become the large hunter my husband needs.
Thanks for everything."

From Aimee in North Carolina "I
was thinking about you the other day. I have some new pics of Mike and my
daughter taken at a local show. Her ID gelding is very green so for now,
she is showing Mikey. She has been short stirrup champ 2 times and short
stirrup eq champ on him at 3 different shows. I cannot tell you the people
who come up to me and ask what he is and they are so impressed. My vet was
at the last show with her horse and took Mike in a division for fun and
she could not get over how fun he is to ride. She placed 3rd in a really
big adult eq class with him. Her trainer then tried to buy him :) Not
happenin'!

Congratulations Lynn and Bonnie! |
Seelie Court (aka Bonnie) is on
her way in the eventing world! She completed her first recognized horse
trial Mayfest, at the Kentucky Horse Park - a long awaited day for owner
and rider Lynn Cronin, whose full report follows:
"Bonnie went Beginner Novice
again, which is the plan for most of this season. We'll see about doing
Novice by the end of the year.
I'm proud to say that once again her great little mind rose to the
occasion and she absolutely COPED with the whole, busy atmosphere all
weekend. There were 425 horses in the Horse Trial, plus a dressage show
AND a rodeo going on--LOTS to look at. With only an hour of turnout a day,
my baby was FOCUSED. I rode her very conservatively in the dressage
because I kept expecting her to spook at SOMETHING...it was crowded (5
rings in one small arena), busy, and noisy with fountains splashing, swans
flying, loudspeakers, grandstands creaking...you name it. Bonnie looked
around for a few seconds and then simply got to work--listened to me 100%
and was as good as gold. Never so much as cocked an ear at anything and
got a few 7's but mostly 6's because the rider was too
tickled with her obedience to remember to ask for more!
Cross country was a small, fair course for an early-season BN, but it was
6 minutes long, which is much longer than Bonnie's ever gone at a canter,
LOL!
The warmup was crazy and the first jump made you turn sharply away from
both the warmup and the barns, so many horses got "herd-bound"
and stopped here. Not my
girl! She never bothers to do more than mosey out of the start box, but
once she picked up her canter she was all pricked ears and listening
again...cruised
right around and did everything without a bobble. SO focused and listening
again--I was delighted with her.
Stadium was a repeat of XC...she always warms up kind of distracted, but
seems to know when she's "on course" and gives me her undivided
attention. She doesn't have the "package" all together yet--it's
hard to keep her canter balanced for an entire course, for instance--but
she bravely took me to every single jump and never batted an eye at all
the distractions outside the ring.
So she took home a pretty pink ribbon for her first USEA Horse Trial,
finishing on her dressage score."
|

|
Padi's Celtic Power competed in
his first mini-event in May. He placed 9th in Dressage and moved up
to 5th after cross country and went clean on stadium jumping.
According to his owners, Chris and Pat, he had a wonderful
time. |

|
4-year-old Crystal Mountain showed
in baby jumpers and baby green hunters in June. Her proud owner had
this to say, " She was very good to pack her amateur owner around who
has not shown and has jumped very minimally in the past 5 years. It
is sort of funny how the homebred baby got me back in the ring :)"
Crystal Mountain is out of Dilithium Crystal (TB) and she is for
sale. |

The Irish Horse Board has updated
the statistics for horses holding points with the Show Jumping Association
of Ireland (SJAI). We are proud to say that Mountain Pearl is now
represented by 17 of his offspring
The leading point holder of the group is Del Amitri, a black
purebred ID stallion owned by Alan Lynch; Second is Sheskeen
Pride (pictured at left) owned by Michael Hayden; and third is Pride
of Corlea, owned by James Riddell.
Congratulations to all of the horses and owners, and the best of luck
with the 2005 season. |
Padi's Celtic Rose has been busy doing a few
classes at shows around the area. She is having a great time,
according to Mary Jo and Frans. "Roisin
was 2nd in the Pre-green hunter under saddle and 4th in the Junior/Amateur
hunter under saddle! We were in a grass/dirt ring and being barefoot
made it a little tough for her to really stretch out, especially in the
2nd class. It was fun to get good placings and comments, from
the judge, Emily Williams. There were some very nice horses there!
And, of course, she enjoyed the outing. She wanted to meet every
person, horse, pony and dog. She especially enjoyed the tent they
had set up with red, white and blue flags, balloons and sparkly streamers.
What a goof. It was hard to drag her back to the trailer, because it
was booooring there"

A beautiful Arabian mare named Tooshay
delivered Mountain Pearl's first Arab cross foal in May. Named
Shannyndoa by her delighted owners, they had this to say
about their 1-month-old filly"
"Shannyn is a delightful horse. She is VERY friendly,
curious, and easy to handle. I've halter broken her and she loves to
follow me around the yard, even with her mother whinnying from the
barn. She loves being the center of attention. Since I've started
riding my mare a little bit again, I pony her along-side and she enjoys
that as well. I think the Arab/Irish Draught cross will be great.
Shannyn looks like she'll have her father's good joints, size and
athleticism with her mother's elegant head and neck. Even the typical
flighty Arab would probably be improved by adding the easygoing
temperament of the ID."

Diamond Shuttle RID
|
Diamond Shuttle
RID was humanely destroyed on June 21, 2005 after enduring catastrophic
injuries in a paddock accident.
Fox Hollow Sport Horses imported her in 2002 from Gerry Woods of County Kildare. She was an incredibly powerful,
substantive and sweet mare who contributed three purebreds to the gene
pool.
Words cannot convey the depth of loss felt by her passing.

5/23/2005 Life around horses never stops
surprising us! Alanna and Maggie kept us waiting for what seemed forever
before foaling in
April. Today, on only day 318, our dear Rachel delivered a
bouncing bay filly.
Both Rachel and the filly were checked out thoroughly, and though
slightly premature everything looks just fine, news which came as a great
relief to Di and to Penny Dodge, who bought the foal in-utero several
months ago. Those who know Penny know how much and for how long she has
yearned for an purebred ID, especially a bay filly by Mountain Pearl - and
now she has her! Congratulations Penny, Lawrence, and the whole
family!
Penny has named the filly Pearls of Faith.

2-year-old Padi's Classic Reunion has left Iowa
and moved east to Virginia where she joined her new owner and best friend
Pam Martin. Pam's plans for her include field hunting and producing
purebred Irish Draught foals.
Congratulations to Pam on the purchase of this exceptional filly, and
Tally Ho! |
Recent e-mails
Piper is not fazed by anything. She loves attention, gives kisses and knows
how to bow. She walks next to me at night in the dark, will stop when I
do. She also does the more mundane stuff, leads, loves splashing in
water, great for the farrier, easy to load, clips, blankets don't bother her,
and a light saddle only produced a ho hum from her. We're eagerly
awaiting her full sister in June! MP is a star!
Have been meaning to send some pics of Mary ( Mirassou Pearl - BD 4/10/04 )
for some time. Here are some almost yearling photos. Looks like her Mom w/
Mt. Pearls bone. Glad to have her.
Bonnie has spent the last 6 weeks in Southern Pines, NC with my
trainer, and today he took her to a small local Horse Trial. I am
proud and happy to report that she scored a 29 in dressage and had clear XC
and stadium rounds, with extra marks--according to her trainer--for
"perfect behavior" at the show. He loves her, and says she's
"thoroughly Irish" and "totally easy" and "a
perfect gem", which of course is all said for my benefit but hey,
coming from an Olympic rider this is heady praise indeed for my little fuzzy
horse stabled next to all the big, fancy eventers!

Youngster Story
 |
Carol, whose daughter owns 2.5 year old IDSH Rooney,
offered to help feed one frigid Iowa day recently. She writes:
"I cannot say enough good words about Rooney. I went out to the
frozen, rutted pasture to bring him in for his supplements. On the
way back out it was pitch back and I could not see anything but the white
fence along the side of the alleyway. He was so good just walking
along slowly with me and waiting when I stepped into a deep rut! I
praised him and told him he was mature enough to be considered twice as
old as he is. You make great babies." |

A Christmas Pearl
 |
Our friend Nancy sent this picture of her foal with a note
"I just love her -- she is so sensible -- the day this picture was
taken the wind blew and it was 15 degrees. She only tried to eat the green
tulle! ... I am looking forward to my second Mountain Pearl .. due
5/23!" |
